If there are better columnists in Texas than Jim Schutze, I haven’t read them yet. Although the Dallas Observer writer is a bloodthirsty investigative reporter, who can jumpstart referendums on city projects while battering anyone in the Big D who tries to run things, Schutze is just as great when he simply has fun.
In his column this week, Schutze does just that. Mocking all those who have complained against renaming a major street after a Latino civil rights icon, the columnist offers a bolder alternative.
“I propose that we change the name of the city from Dallas, Texas, to César Chávez, TX."
I like his explanation on why those of us in Dallas shouldn't be too attached to our city's name:
Who are we named for now? We don't even know. Presumably we are named for some rum-soaked, raccoon-wearing, frog-gigging denizen of the 19th-century wilderness. César Chávez was actually a great man, someone whose life and accomplishments we know well and in detail.
