ACL-who? Is the ACLU of Texas gunshy about criticizing a GLBT group?

Despite being tagged as a liberal group, the ACLU has a sterling record of fighting for all types of people--from white supremacists to Rush Limbaugh--if their rights are being violated. And, on the flip side, they're not afraid to take on left-leaning causes if they're regarding the Constitution as a list of suggestions.  So we were surprised when the ACLU of Texas dodged a question about the homosexuality survey the Resource Center of Dallas handed out to a group of sheriff's deputies.

We sent a copy of the entire survey to ACLU spokeswoman Dotty Griffith and gave her a few hours to look it over. But when we called her at the end of the day yesterday, she mentioned that the Resource Center was a gay and lesbian group. Then, she noted that the ACLU would have no comment, claiming she didn't have enough "context."

Really?

We sent her the entire survey and told her that a private group handed it to a meeting of public employees. What more do you need to know?

Another question: Are we to believe that if the situation were cosmetically different and a "faith-based" service organization handed out a survey asking public employees their thoughts on the New Testament, Jesus and Christianity, the ACLU wouldn't have piped up a bit?

But maybe we're wrong and the center's survey is a good tool in promoting tolerance. Or maybe it's merely a silly form that doesn't raise any workplace or privacy issues. If either are the case, then why doesn't the ACLU come to the center's defense?

We're guessing that the ACLU of Texas knows they can't defend the survey. But they're loathe to criticize a left-leaning group whose intentions are good.  So. Lame.

Did you tell her the "private group" had been retained for that purpose, Matt, speaking of "context"?

Sounds to me like you're channeling Rod Dreher light.

First, re your other post, I’d like to hear from someone higher up in the DPD than just a “spokesperson.” And, since Cece Cox of Resource Center of Dallas said it’s been handed out to DPD recruits “within the last year,” this may be something new over there.

That’s my guess; it’s new, and so DPD spokesperson Janice Crowther may not be familiar with it. (It’s unlikely the entire DPD, even if the survey goes beyond new recruits, takes such a survey every year.)

Beyond that, I'd guess that you're just bloviating right now.
