Bad sign? Kirk England switched parties, so what's up with the old signs?

Last year, Grand Prairie state Rep. Kirk England announced he was switching to the Democratic party, making news across Texas as the first lawmaker in years to undergo such a transition. But recently, yard signs have been spotted in his district asking voters to Re-elect Kirk England, "Republican for state representative."

Now, here's where it gets complicated, at least for my modest mind: Since England was elected in 2006, how could he have a "re-elect Kirk England" sign that identified himself as a Republican? Didn't he only run as a Republican once? And if so, wouldn't this suggest that the England campaign intentionally ordered the wrong signs, perhaps to confuse voters in Republican precincts?

Ah, but I forgot one little thing: England was elected twice in 2006 -- the first time was in a special election in March of that year, the second was in the general in November, when he handed out signs asking voters to re-elect him. Now you get it, right? Actually, Theresa Huchingson, a spokeswoman for England, had to explain it to me twice. I think she thinks I'm an idiot. Well ...

Anyhow, considering that England has run for office twice as a Republican, it's certainly possible that one of his supporters simply pulled an old sign out of the garage without realizing that their House member switched parties.

“I haven’t portrayed myself as a Republican in the last 370 days. So, it certainly wasn’t my camp who put out the sign," England tells Texas Watchdog. "It would seem to be somewhat ridiculous.”

Still, England's Republican opponent, Karen Wiegman, likely still smarting from the Dallas Morning News' endorsement of the incumbent, had a little fun with mixed messages. “Kirk England has finally found a way to bring both Democrats and Republicans together," she said in a statement. "Run as both.”

In any case, if you have planted the wrong sign, be afraid. Be very afraid. Huchingson is watching.

“We handed out a 1,000 of those yard signs two years ago," she says. "If someone chooses to use an old Republican Kirk England sign that’s their choice, but if we saw it, we would stop and pull it out.”

Churches are exempt from having to provide unemployment insurance. But I guess that doesn't apply to big hospitals run by religious orgs??
