While Texans slept off the holiday weekend, the cost of marriage licenses jumped to a sobering fee. Thanks to legislation passed in 2007, documenting true love went from $30 to $60 as the clock stuck 12:01, A.M. on September 1st. However, enterprising couples can have the fee waived if they agree to a government-sponsored "pre-marital education course," according to Radio WOAI. The course, which lasts eight hours, addresses what lawmakers--the bastions of romance and keepers of sacraments that they are--feel are essential to success after "I do." Jeremy Camacho, head of the marriage license division in the Bexar County Clerk's office, told the station the course "...focuses on communication, conflict management, and key components of a successful marriage."Texas Health and Human Services is rushing to ensure classes are available. Through its "Twogether for Texas" program, it has awarded over $8.5 million to groups around the state to implement the courses.
