The Texas Department of Transportation wants to hire someone from the outside to help open up the agency's books and processes -- and the cost will run into the seven figures, the Texas Politics blog reports:Agency staff say they want an outside consultant's expertise and vantage point. That's necessary, they say, to ward off concerns that any changes will be more of the same from a department that has come under fire from a number of lawmakers who say TxDOT's operations have been hidden from their view and the public's.
They envision a Web-based system in which transportation planners, officials and members of the public could easily get detailed, up-to-date information about the progress and cost of individual road projects.
