TxDOT financial transparency to cost $1M or more

By Jennifer Peebles
The Texas Department of Transportation wants to hire someone from the outside to help open up the agency's books and processes -- and the cost will run into the seven figures, the Texas Politics blog reports:

Agency staff say they want an outside consultant's expertise and vantage point. That's necessary, they say, to ward off concerns that any changes will be more of the same from a department that has come under fire from a number of lawmakers who say TxDOT's operations have been hidden from their view and the public's.

They envision a Web-based system in which transportation planners, officials and members of the public could easily get detailed, up-to-date information about the progress and cost of individual road projects.

WTF you have an entire "special investigation" section just on Fred Baron. He is not a public official so how does his personal spending habits have anything to do with government waste and fraud.

So he uses his own money to pay John Edward's girlfriend's rent. That is old news, and not really so much of a big deal... National Enquirer beat you to it like six months ago. DUH.

And again, what does this have to do with government wast and fraud. He earned that money, can't he spend it how he chooses.

With all of the corrupt government officials in Texas, you talk about a private lawyer who pays the bills for a friend's baby mama???

Why don't you try investigating

Peter Morrison, Lumberton ISD

Louie Gohmert, Congressman TX 1st district

Dawna Dukes, TX State Legislator

Nelson Clyde IV, Publisher Tyler Morning Telegraph

that should get you started.

Raj likes money,

Thanks for the suggestions, and, more importantly (to us, anyway) thanks for reading.

As far as investigating Fred Baron, though, over here at Texas Watchdog we're mighty curious about public officials as well as the folks who fund them. I don't think you can fully look at any public official without looking at the money flowing around that public official.

You'll notice we also took a hard look at Bush fundraiser Stephen Payne in our "special investigations" category. Indeed, Payne's "fundraising" underscored a new way to send money to politicians and their pet projects, and we're looking forward at digging into that in a more aggressive way. And as far as Fred Baron, we certainly believe people want to know the motivations of someone who funds so many races.

That said, we're new, we're in search of good stories, and suggestions like yours are just what we need. Feel free to send us a message here or e-mail me personally at trent@texaswatchdog.org.
