Audio tapes of recordings of comments made by Corpus Christi's police chief -- who may or may not have been saying derogatory things about some other folks -- are being sought by the local Caller-Times newspaper.
Police Chief Bryan Smith has been under an internal investigation since October and has been on administrative leave since Nov. 15, the Caller-Times says.
The chief's lawyer says the recordings are harmless. Well, heck, then, that's all the more reason for them to be made public ASAP -- so we can all hear how harmless they are. Right?
But no. The Caller-Times reports it first asked for a copy of the first tape on Oct. 29. That was about 24 days ago -- but, hey, I was never that great at math. What ever happened to the 10-day rule in the state public records law?
Meanwhile, anyone who had hoped there would be resolution to the situation on Friday will be disappointed, the paper says.
Are you using the state's public information laws to get access to material the public needs to see? Are you having problems using the law or running into roadblocks? Where are public officials good at -- and bad at -- observing the law? Texas Watchdog would like to hear from you. Drop me a note at jennifer@texaswatchdog.org.
