A follow-up to one of our previous posts: Tapes and transcripts of phone calls and conversations recorded by Corpus Christi's police chief have been released to the public, and Chief Bryan Smith says he'll retire Dec. 19. The Caller-Times has the transcripts and MP3s posted on its Web site.
Texas is a one-party consent state for taping phone conversations -- you don't need the other party's permission -- but the Corpus Christi Police Department has a rule barring officers from recording each other without consent, the newspaper says.
Despite initial concerns, an internal investigation found that Smith had not made derogatory comments about city leaders and other cops on the tapes, the Caller-Times says.
