Backlash: Houston mayor drops plan to use tax dollars to pay down personal debt for new homebuyers, Chron says

Houston Mayor Bill White has dropped his plan to use public money to pay down personal debt, according to a Chronicle update here.

And it was apparently done in the face of national outcry. The Drudge Report picked up the story, and it was splashed across the United States.

The proposal got plenty of local backlash as well. blogHOUSTON weighed in on the story, as did Lose An Eye, It's a Sport. And as of this writing, there are 1,165 comments on the Chronicle story. I can only guess how many folks called White's office personally.

For a laugh, the folks at the fiscally conservative Empower Texans put out a spoof commercial for the program earlier today via YouTube, which we're embedding below.
