Public records show that taxpayers in Corpus Christi paid out more than $5 million last year to consultants, the Caller-Times newspaper says.

From the story by Sara Foley:

Whether the issue was hiring a city manager, attracting visitors to a city golf course or repaving city streets, the city hired consultants for much of its work.

In the past five years, the city has more than doubled spending on consultants, from $2.3 million in 2003 to $5.2 million in 2008, according to city records released under the Texas Public Information Act. The total for the past five years tops $15.7 million.
