Some spending pointed out by the A-J's Marlena Hartz:
- + $15K of university money flying his wife back and forth from New York and nearly $2K on an expensive taxi service for her. (Baldwin reimbursed the university on Friday, the story says; his wife is CeCe Cord Baldwin, a handbag designer, who lives in New York.)
- + $1,800 in Harvard Club expenses (he's a Harvard alum and member of the HCs of Boston and NYC)
- + $2,500 on theater tickets for a university donor.
- + $4K combined at a silversmith shop and a stationery outlet. The 60 picture frames were bought half-price and were given to friends of the health sciences center as Christmas gifts.
- + $800 for Christmas decorations at his university-owned house.
- + $3,700 to print invitations to a Christmas gala at his house.
Some other notes:
- + Twenty-seven flights he took between October 2007 and July 2008 went over the state's contract rates.
- + He spent $89K in fiscal year 2008 for travel, flights, meals, transportation and lodging, which is more than the combined travel costs of both the UT system chancellor and the president of Texas Tech, the A-J said.
- + He spent about $500 each on meals at both Cafe J and the Double Nickel steakhouse in Lubbock. At the Double Nickel, he was meeting with a commencement speaker; he wasn't present at the Cafe J meal but his wife was, meeting with a couple of potential donors, the story says.
UPDATE, 11:05 a.m. March 16: We corrected the headline on this story, which originally said the money spent was taxpayer money. The money in question is actually funds generated by the hospital. I regret the error. -- JP
