State Rep. Randy Weber of Pearland, who wants to ease permitting for power plants, accepted thousands in energy-related contributions

After accepting thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from energy-related interests last year, freshman state Rep. Randy Weber has introduced House Bill 4012 that would weaken public checks and balances on polluting industries.

The Pearland Republican's legislation would streamline the permit review process, which would save energy companies the hassle of taking their plans directly to the public --and could save them money on the lawyers and lobbyists who do the day-to-day work of securing a permit. The measure would also make it harder for citizen groups to organize and make their case to state regulators.

State Rep. Randy Weber, R-Pearland

For example, Weber's bill would undo the "the opportunity for contested case hearings." That's the main chance the public has to voice concerns about how an aging coal plant has polluted the air, soil and water in their neighborhood. Hearings like this also grab media coverage and catch the attention of citizens who weren't yet aware that a power-generating facility was coming to town.

Weber's bill was up for public hearing today Wednesday.

The lawmaker's donors include oil-and-gas interests as well as the prominent Harold Simmons, a billionaire, whose work could be directly affected by Weber's bill.

Simmons, who Forbes named the one of the richest people in America, runs a firm called Waste Control Specialists. Waste Control recently convinced state regulators to allow them to store nuclear radioactive waste in West Texas. Simmons also contributed $2 million to the Swift Boat ads against 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry and added another $3 million to run an anti-0bama missive.

All told, Weber collected at least $15,000 from energy-related donors last year, according to records on file with the Texas Ethics Commission.

Other Weber donors include Chevron PACs ($1,000), Texas Oil and Gas PAC ($1,000), ExxonMobil ($2,000) and Chevron ($1,000) -- all of whom, like Simmons, have a lot to gain from a bill that weakens regulations on energy companies.

Texas Watchdog left a message with Weber's office Wednesday. We'll update you if we hear from him.

I absolutely support Randy Weber, (R-TX House District 29), to run for Ron Paul's U.S. House seat! Randy Weber is my Texas House Representative and has done an Excellent job!

Regarding his taking donations from the Energy sector ..... what is wrong with that???? The Obama Administration is running the USA into the ground by choking all efforts for us to gain energy independence. At the top of the list of Obama's major contributors are Unions. Should that not be of more concern to us than the energy sector that actually employee so many Americans and pays dividends on so many of our retirement and 401K plans, if we are fortunate enough to still have jobs and investments? Randy Weber is not only supporting what is good for Texas, but he is also supporting what is good for our Country in both economic and foreign affairs by supporting the energy industries. Randy has an excellent rating of #3 in Texas for the Historic Honor Roll list from the Young Conservatives of Texas. (See YCT dot Org website.)

Rep. Weber is very involved in his district and always takes the time to listen and respond to his constituents input and concerns. I couldn't recommend a Texas candidate for promotion to the US Congress more than Rep. Weber, (except for maybe TX Senator Dan Patrick for US Senate!) YOU GO RANDY WEBER!!! I'm behind you and Texas Conservatives are behind you.
