State Sen. Jeff Wentworth is teaming up with the state police to help keep secret details of exactly how the state spends money on the governor's security detail, the Chronicle's R.G. Ratcliffe reports:

The agency spent $252,000 protecting Gov. Rick Perry during a six-month period in 2007 that included trips to Grand Cayman, Mexico, Italy, Iraq, Afghanistan and Turkey. [The Department of Public Safety] spent $3,339 protecting Perry on a single day in 2008 when the governor was in Iowa campaigning for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for president.

The parent companies of the San Antonio Express-News, the Houston Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman have a lawsuit pending against DPS to get access to the details on the spending, Ratcliffe writes. A judge ruled in their favor last year, but DPS has an appeal pending.

Wentworth, a San Antonio Republican, is a 1999 winner of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas' James Madison Award.

Funny, he was the author of HB2564 in the 80th lege that made it very expensive for individuals to obtain large FOIA requests. (it put a 36 hour max per year cap on the time required to put together a FOIA request before an entity can start charging much higher rates for document production.)

The bill was passed in the middle of the night with little or no debate near the close of that legislative session.

So my question is how much did he pay for that award? he had to have bought it, he certainly didn't earn it.
