New Texas Watchdog story raises question: Why did Norwegians hire Houston airport executive?

For those of you who saw our latest story, regarding a Houston Airport System executive's employment by a city in Norway, we wanted to take a moment and make one note to our readers.

For our piece today, Texas Watchdog retained the services of Norwegian freelance journalist Jørn Wad. We thought it would be best for our readers to get help from a journalist in Norway and -- even better -- someone who speaks Norwegian.

Wad spoke earlier this month with Trygve Brekke of the group Greater Stavanger Economic Development, during which, Wad says, Brekke told him that Saba Abashawl was hired by the group because of her connections to Houston Mayor Bill White.

White spokesman Frank Michel spoke with Brekke late last week, and Michel tells us that Brekke told him he never said that. Both Michel and Abashawl also say that's not why she was hired by Greater Stavanger.

After hearing that, we went back to Wad, who says that's what he has in his notes: That Brekke told him that Abashawl was hired because of her connections to the mayor.

And if you read today's story, you'll see both statements noted there.

Texas Watchdog has misquoted me. During a brief conversation with the reporter I NEVER indicated that Saba Abashawl was serving in her current role based on any contacts with the City of Houston. You have unjustly drawn a negative perception on the Stavanger representative in Houston. This libelous action has a complete disregard for the truth. This position was established in 2005 and it was previously held by another individual. This role absolutely does not rely on relations with the City of Houston or the City of Houston Mayor’s Office.

I demand a correction on the way you have misquoted me. You owe an apology to all you have offended. If your mission is to serve the public – you have failed.

Mr. Brekke,

I'm sorry you are not happy with our story. As we mentioned in the blog post to which you responded, we asked our freelance journalist in Norway, Mr. Wad, to double-check, and he says that's what he has in his notes from your conversation. We're glad to have you respond here on the blog.

Take care,

Jennifer Peebles
