Here's the press release we sent out about the story:
Houston, Texas, October 12, 2009 -- City Councilman M.J. Khan wants to be Houston's next city controller -- but does he actually live in the city of Houston?
The developer and engineer, who has represented Council District F for five years, has given two different addresses on official documents in the past few years. One is inside District F. But now he's running for citywide office in the Nov. 3 election, and the other home isn't even inside the Houston city limits.
It's in the small city of Piney Point Village in western Harris County.
When Khan filled out his 2009 personal financial statement -- due back in April -- he listed under "address" 6289 Wilcrest Drive, an address inside the city limits and Khan's council district. However, he did not check the box on that statement which would affirm that it is the councilman's "home address."
And when Khan donated last year to the re-election campaign of a Minnesota Congressional candidate, he listed another address -- a 10,000-square-foot home in Piney Point Village listed in county property tax records in his wife's name.
Khan's campaign says his primary address is inside Houston city limits at the Wilcrest Drive home.

By the way, we were neck-deep in the issue of where Khan lives, and we didn't mention much about what the city controller actually does. The person in this financial post oversees city investments, bond sales and disbursement of city money. The controller also audits city departments and federal grant programs. More info here.
