The story explained that some large donations to the party were reported on the donors' forms covering the first half of the year but did not show up on the July filing of the party.
Our inquiry prompted a "comprehensive audit" of the party's books for the first half of the year, according to the party's deputy director, Marc Cowart.
In full, an e-mail from Cowart read:
In the interest of accuracy, we are currently conducting a comprehensive
audit of the mid-year reports and reconciling with our bank records.
If a clerical error was made and a contribution or contributions were
omitted from the report, we will file an amended report with the appropriate
filing authority.
I will keep you posted as soon as I have an updated disposition in the
matter.
The audit quickly became a political issue with candidates running for chair of the party. Paul Simpson called for an independent audit rather than something in-house, according to the blog Big Jolly Politics. And candidate Ed Hubbard has brought up this issue as well.
