The Houston Independent School District Board is set to decide Thursday who will manage the food students in HISD eat every day.
Aramark Educational Services Inc., the current contract holder, is the company being recommended from HISD administration for the 2010-11 school year. The contract would be capped at $5.8 million, and would include a six-figure, multi-year plan aimed at marketing the cafeteria food to kids.
The marketing would include an "investment to redo and restage kitchen areas and the presentation of food," said Melinda Garrett, Houston ISD's chief financial officer. The company is "making a $613,000 commitment over three years to do that."
But Trustee Anna Eastman cautioned that it takes more than painting cafeteria walls to get kids to eat the school food, citing her 7-year-old as an example. The child noticed the decorations in his school cafeteria, Eastman said, but had reported the "quality of the food was the same."
Trustee Harvin Moore stressed the importance of parent involvement when HISD renews contracts. See his comments in the clip below.
