You may have seen the Houston Chronicle's story today about an HISD initiative to pay students $30 a day to attend Saturday tutoring sessions.

(Grier's plan) also includes replacing most of the principals, ousting ineffective teachers, extending the school year and day, and offering a double dose of math and English to students below grade level. ...
Students behind academically would be asked to attend two Saturday sessions a month for three hours each. They would earn $30 a day, plus free breakfast and lunch.
The rate has inched up a bit since Grier first proposed the pay-to-learn plan last month. He said then that the Houston Independent School District could pay the students $7 to $8 an hour under what administrators have named the Apollo 20 program. See what Grier said at that time about the fairness of paying some students to learn, but not others.
