Texas lost about $1.5 million in revenue last year because of the camera systems on state toll roads, the Texas Department of Transportation told an Austin TV station.
KVUE-TV in Austin is reporting that of the 75 million cars photographed at toll stations across Texas, almost 1.5 million of those drivers did not receive bills from TxDOT.
Of those not billed, roughly 900,000 drove cars without license plates or with plates that were too obscured to be read by the cameras, the TV station reported. Another 475,000 could not be found at the addresses that were part of the license plate record. Photos too blurry to read were responsible for 112,000 missed tolls.
While the Department of Transportation would like a perfect system, spokesman Karen Amaker said, 112,000 unusable photos or .15-percent of the 75 million total is much lower than the 2-percent tolerance included in the state’s contract with the camera system vendor.
