Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson was arrested Wednesday night after he led officers on a short chase near his home in northeast Houston.
HPD said Johnson was speeding in the 2600 block of the Eastex Freeway service road around 9:40 p.m. and refused to stop when officers attempted to pull him over.
Johnson continued to drive five or six blocks before he pulled over to a private driveway, where he was taken into custody.
A woman who was in the SUV with Johnson was released, police said.
This is more serious, certainly, than Johnson's unpaid tax bill -- which Texas Watchdog reported on last year.
A Johnson staffer said he appreciated Texas Watchdog "bringing it to his attention" and said it was an oversight that the tax bill for land in the 2600 block of Staples Street hadn't been paid since 2006.
Johnson owed about $1,600. Johnson paid the bill Monday, said Amie Francis, his chief of staff.
"It slipped his mind," Francis said. "It's something that his wife normally takes care of."
