State Rep. Joe Heflin, a member of the House Election Committee, was fined $1,200 by the State Ethics Commission for election reporting violations.
In a report issued late in the day Thursday, the Ethics Commission said Heflin, D-Crosbyton, had made errors on several campaign reports filed in 2006, during his first successful run for the House seat in District 85.
The commission found that Heflin had failed to include the occupations or job descriptions for 46 campaign donors on five contribution reports. He failed to properly report reimbursements to staff of about $3,000 and failed to report the reimbursement from his campaign for $267 in personal expenditures, according to the commission report.
Contacted Friday in the district, Heflin said he made technical errors on reports he was filing for the first time, errors he corrected when they were brought to his attention.
"Like, I reimbursed myself $267 and reported it, but I put it on the wrong schedule. Hey, I did it,' Heflin said. "But there was no absconding with money or anything like that. It seems like this happens a lot to first-time candidates."
