Brownsville Housing Authority blocks disclosure of records, ignores court date with AG

It goes like this: a spurned applicant for a tutoring job at the Brownsville Housing Authority filed an open records request to see what was behind the hire of his competition. The authority lost an appeal to the state Attorney General, then sued the AG.

It then ignored a court date in the case against the AG and a judge ordered the authority to pay court costs for the state.

Now the authority is asking for a new trial, according to a video report from KRGV Channel 5.

This is not the first time the authority has tried to hide its actions. Earlier this year, it refused to disclose the names of the people applying for its executive director position. Eventually, the former CFO for the Brownsville Independent School District got the job.

It's almost as if James Bond villain Dr. No (pictured) would be right at home at the Brownsville Housing Authority.

Housing authorities are funded wholly through the government. The Brownsville Housing Authority was receiving between $3 million and $9 million annually in the '90s, the latest online data we could find.
