Waterbuck, buffalo and GOP elite: Exotic Game Ranch the venue for Texas GOP's election night party

From your vantage you can see them, the exotic and the common. Over there you spot a wavy-antlered addax of the Sahara. There you spy the aoudad, the thick-horned sheep of arid, mountainous North Africa. And just over the ridge, in increasing numbers, come pointy-toed Republicans gathering in small flocks around television sets.

The Republican Party of Texas is having its election night watch party beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday at a game ranch just outside Buda. Anyone who is anyone in the Republican Party in Texas, including Gov. Rick Perry, will be there. And if 55 different species of rare animals with more horns than the World Cup final isn't exotic enough for you, the ranch is built next to the Texas Disposal Systems landfill and compost operations.

Actually, the 1,175-acre working ranch is the entertainment part of the disposal company's business founded and owned by Bob and Jim Gregory. The company has landfill and recycling operations in Austin, San Antonio, Alpine and Georgetown. The Gregory brothers donate use of their Exotic Game Ranch and Pavilion free of charge to nonprofit organizations they deem qualified.

Bob Gregory also donates his time to Texas, serving as Perry's appointee to the committee with the uncompacted name, the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission.

Preferring to mingle with entirely different animals, the Travis County Democratic Party is hosting their state watch party in an urban redoubt, at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the lovely, historic and mostly domesticated Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin, according to state party spokeswoman Kirsten Gray.

What is the message here? What are we to watch? You have surely lost you way or you are making a political statement. That is not the way of an organization I will continue to accept emails from. Which ever side you are picking ...goodbye

Relax Tom, I think this is simply a light observation about a unique location for an election watching party and is not meant to be a "political statement". If this post so offends you, maybe you it is best you stop reading such provocative posts.

Mark, thanks for a bit of levity along with your usual insightful reporting.
