A nurse who is suspected of killing between 11 to 47 babies in her care in the 1970s and '80s may get out of prison in a few years, KHOU-TV reports.

A report on Genene Jones by Channel 11's Jeff McShan is today's featured video on the Texas Watchdog home page

McShan says:

Jones was a nurse who tried to play God. She would inject infants with heparin or succinylchlorine to make them sick and then would later try to resuscitate them. She would try to save their lives to look like a hero.

But not all of them survived. It is believed that, while she worked for the Bexar County Medical Center, Jones murdered anywhere from 11-to-47 babies who were in her care.

The exact number is unknown because one hospital, worried about litigation and public outrage, destroyed all of its records.

Jones got a 99-year sentence for two murder convictions, but the convictions came at a time when Texas law gave time off for good behavior due to serious prison overcrowding. Because of that, Jones will be slated for "mandatory release" in 2017, after serving just 32 years.

McShan spoke with Petti McClellan, whose daughter, Chelsea, would have been 27 now. Chelsea died at just 15 months after being treated by Jones at a hospital in Kerrville; an ambulance carrying the baby to a larger hospital wrecked on the way to San Antonio.
