Houston's public school system will do more with less, Superintendent Terry Grier says.

A report from KTRK-TV on Grier's "State of the Schools" address is today's featured video on the Texas Watchdog home page.

The Houston schools are facing huge budget cuts because of the state's budget shortfall -- budget cuts that could lead to layoffs.

While he said the impact on the cuts will be "tremendous," KTRK's Cynthia Cisneros reported, Grier largely stayed positive in his Thursday speech and talked about how he is looking at curriculum revamps and efforts to get more kids graduating, including by opening dozens of "grad labs" and several "twilight" high schools.

Grier said classroom teachers are the last employees he wants to cut, Cisneros said.
