Eight years after the Texas Legislature approved allowing vineyard owners to sell wine directly to tourists, the House has decided it might be alright for the state’s brewers to do the same.

The unanimous vote approving HB 602 by Rep. Jessica Farrar, D-Houston, either shows how far the House has come on the issue or that the Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas are saving their considerable wealth and lobbying expertise for the Senate.

The distributors have so far said publicly they support onsite sales at breweries, something that has become a popular part of an exploding craft brewing tourism business nationally, according to a story in the San Antonio Express News.

Small craft brewers like Saint Arnold in Houston, Real Ale Brewing Co. in Blanco and Live Oak Brewing Co. in Austin have supported nearly identical bills that withered on the legislative hop vine in the past three sessions.

A similar bill filed in this session by state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, has failed to make it out of committee.
