Texas last among states on return-per-dollar from federal gas tax

Texas is dead last in the ratio of highway funding it receives compared to the fuel taxes it pays to the federal government. That isn’t really the bad news.

The bad news is that Congress has since 2008 added so much to the highway trust fund that all 50 states receive more federal money than they pay in, according to a story by Stateline this morning.

The figures come from a report by the Government Accountability Office ginned up in an effort to plug yet another federal deficit spending leak. Congress last passed a major highway bill in 2009, and the federal government is currently unable to meet all of the commitments it made to federal highway programs, the story says.

As one might expect when dealing with a federal spending plan, the nation’s two leading oil and gas producers are on opposite ends of the government funnel.

For every dollar Texas pays in federal gas taxes, the government gives $1.03 back in federal transportation aid. A majority of states, 29, get $1.25 or less on their $1 investment.

Alaska, on the other hand, gets $4.99 for each of its gas tax dollars, and eight other states get at least two for one in the deal.
