It’s an idea as thrifty as consolidating school districts, municipalities and police and fire departments. Cameron County Commissioners Thursday night voted to merge several constables' districts in an effort to cut costs.

Most of the towns in that South Texas county have their own police departments, and several small universities, like the University of Texas at Brownsville and University of Texas-Pan American, also have their own departments.

Such a change doesn’t come easy. According to the Brownsville Herald, one dissenting Cameron County commissioner alleged that those in favor had lobbied others to go along with the plan outside the publicly called sessions -- a potential violation of the state’s open meetings laws. A constable whose office would be eliminated has already run screaming for a lawyer to come to the rescue.

And the plan still has to be approved by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Then there’s the succinct assessment of a commenter who posts at the Herald’s site, “They should eliminate them all. Constables are as worthless as tits on a boar hog, and just another expense for the Cameron Co. taxpayers. There is nothing they do that can't easily be done by the Cameron Co Sheriff's Dept.”

Ahh, we really hadn’t thought of such an analogy, but it sure does keep the politics local.
