A panel of three federal judges in San Antonio pushed back until 6 p.m. Monday the deadline for filing to run for office in Texas.
The panel accepted an agreement by the principals involved in the federal court challenge to the redistricting done by a Republican majority during the past session of the Legislature, according to a story today by the San Antonio Express News. Candidates were to have filed no later than the end of the work day today.
At the same time, a federal court in Washington, D.C. set Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 to hear closing arguments in something called a pre-clearance trial scheduled for Jan. 17-26, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
The trial is expected to settle a lawsuit contending that the redistricting maps made law by the Legislature violated Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act and circumscribed representation of minorities in the state.
The new filing deadline will allow the Republican Party to resume its filing process, while guaranteeing a second filing period after the state’s voting districts are finalized, the Express News story says.
