Residents in a San Antonio school district are crusading to change the name on a sports building from that of a disgraced official to an Iraq war casualty.

The Ron Durbon Athletic Center in the South San Antonio Independent School District is a 2,000-seat auditorium with offices and a training center.

Superintendent Ron Durbon, though, was fired last year amidst allegations that he failed to investigate charges that Gary Durbon, his son and athletic director at the district at the time, used district computers to view pornography. Ron Durbon appealed  his canning to the Texas Education Agency and lost – see ruling here.

Gary quit earlier this year, promising to divulge the dirt on the district.

So the Durbon name isn’t exactly golden, and that’s where Jessica Jimenez jumps in. The 31-year-old district graduate is behind changing the name of the athletic facility to something honoring Ray Rangel, a South San Antonio grad who was killed in 2005.

“The community wanted the building named after Ray before,” Jimenez said in an interview with Texas Watchdog. “The board didn’t do that, and Durbon got his way. We told the district what we wanted, and they ignored us.”

The board will consider the name change at its April 18 meeting, Jimenez said.

Durbon had returned to the district as superintendent in 2005 after retiring in 1998.  His son Gary was implicated in the fall when $25,000 in football support funds went missing.  A former secretary at the district was indicted in March in connection with the theft.
