Disciplinary records offer insight into Hays County sheriff’s race

Using information from public records, Sean Kimmons of the Hays Free Press in Kyle provides readers data on the ways two sheriffs managed their offices.

People may disagree about what those statistics mean. But presenting what he found supplies voters more context as they decide how to cast their ballot in the Hays County sheriff’s contest Tuesday.

The race will be decided in next week’s Republican primary because no Democrat filed to run, Kimmons reports. The contest pits the current sheriff, Gary Cutler, against the man he beat about a year-and-a-half ago, Tommy Ratliff.

Kimmons focuses on the differences in management styles between Cutler and Ratliff that he gleaned from sheriff’s office documents.

More employees lost their jobs and received penalties for bad behavior under Ratliff than Cutler. Some say that’s due to a more vigilant system that disciplined inappropriate behavior when Ratliff ran things. Others say the picture shows a fairer approach by Cutler when dealing with transgressions.

Either way, Hays County residents are more informed due to Kimmons giving voters as much material as possible before they go to the polls.
